Learn to Row
Details
Event information
Our Learn to Row Program covers the basics of rowing for beginners and is a refresher for those returning to it after some time away.
Rowing is a highly technical sport that requires months of dedicated technique training and a moderate to high level of fitness and personal discipline. Rowing is not a sport that can be learned quickly - but completing a LTR will certainly get you on the right track.
Our program is designed to teach you the basics to help you on the path to competent oarsman ship. We will cover both sculling and sweep rowing throughout the weekend. We endeavor to group rowers based on their level of experience to make the process as beneficial for you as possible.
You will be coached by a team of Level 1 and Level 2 certified coaches.
By the end of the program we hope you will understand:
- The names for the parts of the boat and oars.
- How to tell which side and where in the boat the oars should be used.
- The terms used to start, stop and maneuver the boat.
- Take a boat off the rack, place it on trestles to adjust slides and foot stretches and put the boat into the water without damaging any of the valuable equipment.
- How to get into the boat safely and push away from the pontoon to make your way along Breakfast Creek safely.
- Row competently enough that you can proceed with minimum supervision. This includes knowing how to maneuver the boat by rowing either side forwards and backwards and how to bring the boat to an abrupt stop.
- The rules of the river as they apply to rowing.
- How to bring the boat safely back to the pontoon, complete wash down and storage.
- How best to use an Indoor Rower to suit the sport of rowing.
The program will run over a series of 4 sessions. Attendance at all sessions is a must if you wish to gain the most from the program and advance to a transition program.
